As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic shuttered television productions round the world, many seasons of television came to a premature end this past May. However, while the Arrowverse's various series came to an abrupt close, one superhero show immediately arose to choose up the baton and chart a brand new direction for DC on television: Stargirl. Airing on both DC Universe and therefore the CW, the new superhero series began the 2020 summer television season at a time when beleaguered audiences needed it the foremost, with its positive message and themes coming at the proper time to allow a viewers a desperately needed escape and inspirational boost.

Based on the DC superhero created by Geoff Johns and Lee Moder, Johns based Courtney Whitmore -- Stargirl's main character -- on his sister, who tragically kicked the bucket in a very plane explosion in 1996. Johns went on to become the series creator and showrunner for the DCU show, stepping up to pen a 3rd of the episodes for its inaugural season. a comparatively faithful adaptation of the initial comic book source material, the series has Courtney move along with her family to a nondescript Midwestern town where she discovers her stepfather's legacy as a superhero sidekick before inheriting the legacy and Cosmic Staff of Starman to become her own hero.

In terms of release, Stargirl couldn't have come at a more robust time. The show was initially intended to premiere in late 2019 and air exclusively on DC Universe. because the premiere was pushed back to May 2020, the extra time in post-production allowed Johns to draw from his background producing wonder woman, Aquaman and Shazam! to craft visual effects a cut above most of its superhero counterparts on television at the time, bringing a cinematic level of quality to them. Six months before its premiere, Stargirl was announced to air on The CW every day after each episode's arrival on DCU, giving it the widest availability of any DCU series ever.

First appearing in a very small cameo at the top of the Arrowverse crossover event "Crisis on Infinite Earths," it had been clear that Stargirl would be a more hopeful, aspirational story, buoyed by likable leads. it is a coming-of-age story that explores generational legacy, all couched within the aesthetic of timeless Americana. Even The Flash isn't as family-friendly as Stargirl. Despite this, Stargirl never plays all the way down to its audience. Blending teen drama with superhero action, Stargirl shows Courtney finding her place within her family while inspiring a complete generation to follow her lead against overwhelming evil.

And this theme may be a more timely one than ever. Stargirl opens with evil triumphantly claiming victory because the Injustice Society decimates the Justice Society of America in an exceedingly devastating, all-out attack. While the supervillains' presence isn't felt immediately following this loss, the thought that America and heroes' golden age is behind them is about by this inciting incident. And it's Courtney leading the charge to inspire other tykes to acknowledge their own potential, regardless of how ostracized they're in their personal lives, and fight for a stronger future, whether or not the adults are unwilling to facilitate or maybe respect that drive. That message is one that resonates especially deeply in the face of increasingly polarized politics, social injustices and an absence of effective leadership.

From its wholesome, timeless production sensibilities and effervescently vibrant cast to positive messaging about finding the courage to confront injustice head-on -- the villain's team literally has "Injustice" within the name to assist hammer that thematic association home -- Stargirl is that the superhero series desperately needed for 2020. And while by no means intentional, the delay to mid-May and expansion from DC Universe perfectly positioned the series to debut at a time when it had been needed the foremost.

Already renewed for a second season, it'll be interesting to determine how the change in network and current zeitgeist affects Stargirl's narrative moving forward. Regardless, though, Courtney Whitmore are going to be right at the front of the charge with the new Justice Society to bring out the most effective in those round her as superhero legacies are revitalized by a less cynical and world-weary generation.

DC Universe's Stargirl stars Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore (Stargirl) and Luke Wilson as Pat Dugan (S.T.R.I.P.E.). The series airs Monday on DC Universe and Tuesdays on The CW at 8 pm ET/PT. It also stars Amy Smart, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Trae Romano, Jake Austin Walker, Hunter Sansone, Meg DeLacy, Neil Jackson and Christopher James Baker.
